Storage - The 10 Levels of Pallet Storage Technology

  • The alternatives available to store pallets today are many and span from conventional manual handling to lights-out deep lane AS/RS.  This session will expose you to a broad array of technologies and compare them in terms of investment, ROI, physical capabilities, pros, cons, best fit applications and operational implications.  This is a great overview for the poor soul who thinks that technology implies mile-high rack systems that require an oil well and PhD to own and operate.  New hybrid solutions will pleasantly surprise you!   In addition, MWPVL International has developed a new automated tool to economically assess multiple automated distribution centers and this will be presented for the first time at this session.

  • Slotting - Tools and Views on Smart Replenishment
  • Optimizing the putaway locations of your stored inventory based on demand and history sounds great on paper.  Why wouldn't you do it?  This point-counterpoint panel discussion debates the utility of contemporary slotting/reslotting software vs. the subjective wisdom of manual management.  Included will be a short overview of a typical modern tool, a friendly discussion of the 2 approaches and some time for audience Q & A and participation. It may not be conclusive but will be fun to watch!

  • Value Added Strategies for Today’s Challenging Distribution Channel

OfficeMax Optimizes Its Distribution Network Strategy

The OfficeMax supply chain supports 2 fundamentally different businesses – 50% retail (950+ stores) and 50% direct sales (thousands of contract customers).  The distribution network consists of 27 sites stocking in excess of 30,000 SKUs for replenishing stores and supplying direct and contract sales channels with next day delivery.  In 2008, with the onset of the recession, OfficeMax recognized it needed to continue to improve product availability and inventory turns while dramatically reducing operating expenses.  A distribution network optimization study was performed to leverage the recession and to drive network design innovation to position the company for long term profitable growth. This is the story of this study and the results that were achieved by OfficeMax.
